Blogged under Big Cards News,Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page,General by admin on Tuesday 30 August 2011 at 4:55 pm

The Arizona Cardinals have signed 27-year old cornerback Fred Bennett.  Bennett played in 9 games for the Chargers & Bengals last year and he had 2 tackles.  He has now played in 49 games in his first four years in the NFL and he has 125 tackles, 21 passes defensed, 5 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles and 1 tackle for a loss.  The Cardinals were smart to act quick in trying to replace CB Greg Toler.  Bennett is a downgrade from him, but he is still a decent player.

UPDATE:  (9/3/2011) – The Cardinals have released CB Fred Bennett.

The Arizona Cardinals waive WR Max Komar

Blogged under Big Cards News,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Leaving Town by admin on Monday 29 August 2011 at 6:37 pm

The Cardinals have waived 24-year old WR Max Komar.  Komar played in 8 games as a rookie last year for the Cardinals and he caught 12 passes for 117 yards (9.8 avg) without a TD catch.  Komar didn’t have much of a chance to make the Cardinals’ in 2011 and a lingering knee injury didn’t help his cause.  The Cardinals won’t miss Komar too much as they are pretty solid at WR for 2011.

The Arizona Cardinals lose CB Greg Toler for the season

Blogged under Big Cards News,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injury Reports by admin on Monday 29 August 2011 at 5:53 pm

The Arizona Cardinals have lost 26-year old cornerback Greg Toler for the season due to a torn ACL.  He played in 14 games for the Cardinals last year and he had 90 tackles, 9 passes defensed, 2 interceptions (1 returned for a TD), 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 sack and 3 tackles for a loss.  He has played in 27 games in his first two years in the NFL and he has 101 tackles, 11 passes defensed, 3 interceptions (1 returned for a TD), 1 sack, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery and 3 tackles for a loss.  The Cardinals are going to miss Toler as he really stepped up last season for them.

San Diego Chargers 34, Arizona Cardinals 31

Chargers’ QB Billy Volek hit WR Bryan Walters with a 14-yard TD pass with 3 seconds left in the game last night and it doomed the Cardinals!  Kevin Kolb did his part as he completed 11 of 20 passes for 205 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 INTs.  Richard Bartel finished the game up at QB and he was solid in completing 8 of 10 passes for 76 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 INTs.  Beanie Wells led the way on the ground for the Cardinals last night with 63 yards on 10 carries (6.3 ypc).  LaRod Stephens-Howling also had a very solid game as he carried the ball 6 times for 40 yards (6.7 ypc) and he also caught 1 pass for 6 yards (it went for a TD).  William Powell pitched in with 26 yards rushing on 6 carries (4.3 ypc) and he also caught 1 pass for 19 yards in this game.  WR Larry Fitzgerald must love his new contract because he caught 3 passes for 108 yards (36.0 avg) with 1 TD grab last night.  The Cardinals finished up with 167 yards rushing on 25 carries (6.7 ypc) and they also completed 19 of 30 passes (63.3%) for 264 yards in this game.

The Cardinals defense had as many holes as a slice of swiss cheese in this game.  LB Daryl Washington (7 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss) and DE Calais Campbell (5 tackles) led the way for the D in this game.  Rookie CB Patrick Peterson picked off a pass and he returned it 34 yards for a TD.  The Chargers finished up with 111 yards rushing on 21 carries (5.3 ypc) and they also completed 27 of 45 passes (60%) for 321 yards in this game.  The Cardinals are now 1-2 on the preseason.

The Arizona Cardinals waive QB Max Hall

Blogged under Big Cards News,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Leaving Town by admin on Thursday 25 August 2011 at 1:45 pm

The Cardinals have waived 25-year old QB Max Hall.  Hall played in 6 games (3 starts) as a rookie for the Cardinals last year and he completed 39 of 78 passes (50%) for 370 yards with 1 TD pass and 6 INTs (35.7 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 1 time for -5 yards last year.  Hall was 1-2 (33.3%) as the starting QB for the Cardinals last year.  This is no big loss to the Cardinals as Hall has a dislocated left shoulder.  This isn’t much of a loss for the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals sign punter Dave Zastudil

Blogged under Big Cards News,Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page,General by admin on Thursday 25 August 2011 at 1:41 pm

The Cardinals have signed 32-year old punter Dave Zastudil to compete with Ben Graham for the starting job in 2011.  Zastudil didn’t play at all last year due to a knee injury.  He has played in 113 games in his first 8 years in the NFL and he has punted the ball 581 times for 24,825 yards (42.7 avg).  Zastudil has 59 touchbacks (10.2%) and he has pinned the opposition inside their own 20-yard line 179 times (30.8%).  Zastudil will have a good shot of bumping Graham out of a job, if he looks good the next couple of weeks.

UPDATE:  (9/3/2011) – Dave Zastudil has won the starting punter job for the Cardinals in 2011.

The Arizona Cardinals sign QB Brodie Croyle

Blogged under Big Cards News,Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page,General by admin on Tuesday 23 August 2011 at 9:34 pm

The Cardinals have signed 28-year old QB Brodie Croyle.  Croyle played in 2 games (1 start) for the Chiefs last year and he completed 8 of 19 passes (42.1%) for 38 yards with 0 TD passes and 1 INT (27.7 QB Rating).  He  has played in 18 games (10 starts) in his first five years in the NFL and he has completed 181 of 319 passes (56.7%) for 1,669 yards with 8 TD passes and 9 INTs (67.8 QB Rating).  Croyle has also carried the ball 10 times for 15 yards (1.5 ypc) in his NFL career.  Croyle is 0-10 as a starting QB in the NFL.  Croyle will battle Richard Bartel for the #3 QB job in 2011.  That is because Max Hall has a separated left shoulder and he could be placed on I.R. or simply let go.

UPDATE:  (9/3/2011) – The Cardinals have released Brodie Croyle.

The Arizona Cardinals lose rookie RB Ryan Williams for the season

Blogged under Big Cards News,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injury Reports,The Draft Report by admin on Monday 22 August 2011 at 3:37 pm

The Cardinals will be without rookie RB Ryan Williams for the rest of the 2011 season due to a ruptured right patellar tendon.  This really hurts the depth at RB as the Cardinals dealt Tim Hightower to the Redskins just a couple of weeks ago.  The Cardinals will be depending on Beanie Wells to carry the load in the running game.  He is very injury prone, so LaRod Stephens-Howling could get his big chance to show what he can do in 2011.  At the very least, Stephens-Howling will be the Cardinals’ #2 back in 2011.  Williams’ injury was a huge blow to the Cardinals’ offense.

Green Bay Packers 28, Arizona Cardinals 20

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Pre-Season by admin on Saturday 20 August 2011 at 1:20 pm

The Cardinals played good on offense and not so good on defense last night against the Packers.  Kevin Kolb was so-so last night as he completed 6 of 11 passes for 80 yards.  He also carried the ball 1 time for 5 yards last night.  John Skelton didn’t look too good in this game as he completed 3 of 7 passes for 39 yards.  Richard Bartel was the most impressive QB of the night for the Cardinals as he completed 13 of 19 passes for 169 yards with 1 TD pass and 1 INT.  Max Hall finished up this game as QB as he completed 2 of 4 passes for 13 yards.  Beanie Wells led the way on the ground for the Cardinals last night with 44 yards rushing on 11 carries (4.0 ypc).  Alfonso Smith pitched in with 12 carries for 39 yards (3.3 ypc) with 1 TD run and he also caught 2 passes for 21 yards (10.5 avg).  TE Rob Housler led the way in the passing game last night with 5 grabs for 68 yards (13.6 avg).  WRs DeMarco Simpson (3 rec, 68 yards), Early Doucet (3 rec, 43 yards) and Stephen Williams (2 rec, 19 yards, TD) also pitched in for the Cardinals in the passing game last night.  The Cardinals finished up with 95 yards rushing on 27 carries (3.5 ypc) and they also completed 24 of 41 passes (58.5%) for 289 yards as they had possession of the ball for 33:03.

CB Bryant Nnaduife led the way for the Cardinals’ D last night with 5 tackles.  The Packers finished up with 85 yards rushing on 23 carries (3.7 ypc) and they also completed 21 of 27 passes (77.8%) for 297 yards last night.  The Cardinals are now 1-1 on the pre-season.

Arizona Cardinals 24, Oakland Raiders 18

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Pre-Season by admin on Friday 12 August 2011 at 3:43 pm

The Arizona Cardinals used all four of their QBs, but it was the last one (Max Hall) who led them to victory.  Hall completed all 4 of his pass attempts good for 66 yards with a TD pass.  The TD pass went to WR Isaiah Williams went for 28-yards with only 39 seconds left in the game as Max Hall was impressive.  Kevin Kolb was effective in his Cardinals’ debut as he completed 4 of 7 passes for 68 yards and he also carried the ball 2 times for 19 yards (9.5 ypc).  John Skelton followed Kolb in to the game and he was sharp.  Skelton completed 6 of 10 passes for 94 yards with 1 TD pass.  Richard Bartel also threw a TD passs as he completed 4 of 9 passes for 69 yards.  RB Alfonso Smith was the Cardinals’ leading rusher with 30 yards on 5 carries (6.0 ypc).  Beanie Wells carried the ball 6 times for 22 yards (3.7 ypc) and rookie Ryan Williams carried the ball 4 times for 21 yards (5.3 ypc) last night.  WRs Larry Fitzgerald (2 rec, 60 yards), Isaiah Williams (3 rec, 50 yards, TD) and Stephen Williams (2 rec, 39 yards, TD) led the way in the passing game for the Cardinals last night.  TE Rob Housler pitched in with 2 receptions for 18 yards (9.0 avg) with a TD.  The Cardinals rushed for 110 yards on 25 carries and they passes for 290 yards last night as the offense looked pretty solid.

Safety Hazma Abdullah and LB Reggie Walker led the way for the Cardinals’ D last night with 5 tackles apiece.  LB Brandon Sharpe also had a very solid game for the Cardinals last night with 3 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss an 1 sack.  The Raiders carried the ball 27 times for 95 yards (3.5 ypc) last night as the Cardinals played tough against the run.  The Raiders completed 23 of 36 passes (63.9%) for 234 yards passing last night though, so the pass defense has a lot to work on.
