Arizona Cardinals vs. St. Louis Rams

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by dawgpounded on Friday 5 October 2007 at 5:26 pm

Something has to give in this game as the Cardinals are 0-2 on the road and the Rams are 0-4 overall.  The Rams have played much better at home this season as they have been outscored 44-29 in their 2 losses.  The Cardinals have lost each of their road games by 3 points.

The Cardinals have remade their team in the image of the head coach.  That means they like to run the football and Edgerrin James has bounced back this season (354 yards rushing, 4.4 ypc, 3 TDs) after an off year in 2006.  James figures to have a lot of success against a Rams defense that is allowing 157.0 yards rushing per game and 4.7 yards per carry.  The Cardinals have been switching up the QBs so Matt Leinart will likely start the game and Kurt Warner will play some in the middle.  Warner has been outstanding this season and he will likely want to stick it to his old team.  Look for WR Larry Fitzgerald (26 rec, 315 yards) to have a great game against the Rams this week.

The Rams would be smart to run the football and throw a lot of short passes this week due to the massive injuries they have suffered.  Gus Frerotte will be getting the start at QB behind a makeshift offensive line that has allowed 11 sacks already this season.  For Frerotte to have a chance at success he will need Torry Holt, Drew Bennett and Randy McMichael to catch short passes and get some yards after the catch.  The Rams would also be smart to get rookie RB Brian Leonard a lot of touches to keep the Cardinals linebackers busy so they can’t blitz as often.

PREDICTION:  The Rams just have too many injuries to compete with the Cardinals who are a team on the rise.  Look for the Cardinals to win this game by more than a TD.

Rookie return man Steve Breaston is making an impact for the Arizona Cardinals

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by dawgpounded on Friday 5 October 2007 at 12:10 am

Steve Breaston has been an impact player on special teams.  Last week Breaston had a key 73-yard punt return for a TD which was the difference in the game against the Steelers.  He has now returned 10 punts for 148 yards (14.8 avg) with a TD.  He also has been solid on kickoff returns as he has 170 yards on 7 returns (24.3 avg).  J.J. Arrington appears to have lost his job as kick returner to Breaston.  Arrington has returned 5 kickoffs for 97 yards (19.4 avg) so far this season.

Arizona Cardinals 21, Pittsburgh Steelers 14

The Arizona Cardinals left it all out on the field for Coach Whisenhunt and Coach Grimm and it paid off in a huge victory over the Steelers yesterday.  Matt Leinart started the game and he completed 7 of 14 passes for 93 yards and carried the ball 3 times for 9 yards (3.0 ypc) before Kurt Warner relieved him.  Warner played well again as he hit 14 of 21 passes for 132 yards with 1 TD pass.  Edgerrin James did a decent job running the ball as he carried it 21 times for 77 yards (3.7 ypc) with 1 TD run.  Larry Fitzgerald had a breakout game as he caught 11 passes for 123 yards (11.2 avg) with 1 TD grab.  Jerheme Urban also had a solid game with 5 catches for 53 yards (10.6 avg) with a TD.  The Cardinals finished up with 86 yards rushing on 25 carries (3.4 ypc) and they also completed 21 of 35 passes for 215 yards.

The defense was inspired against the Steelers.  OLB Calvin Pace (8 tackles), DT Darnell Dockett (6 tackles, 3 sacks) and safety Adrian Wilson (5 tackles, interception) all were outstanding for the Cardinals.  The Cardinals held the Steelers to 77 yards rushing on 26 carries (3.0 ypc) and the Steelers completed 17 of 32 passes for 205 yards.

The big difference maker for the Cardinals in this game was rookie WR/KR Steve Breaston.  Breaston returned 4 punts for 101 yards (25.3 avg) including a 73 yard TD!  He also returned 2 kickoffs for 55 yards (27.5 avg).
