The Arizona Cardinals need Neil Rackers to rebound in 2007

Neil Rackers broke out in 2005 with an incredible season but last year he was merely an average kicker.  Rackers made 75.7% of his field goals last season and he converted all 32 of his extra points to finish with 116 points.  Rackers made all 20 of his field goals that were 39 yards or less but he was only 8 of 17 on kicks of 40+ yards.

Rackers has now played in 102 career NFL games and he has scored 591 points for an average of 5.8 points per game.  Rackers has now made 143 of 187 (76.5%) of his field goal attempts and he has converted 162 of 165 extra points.

The Arizona Cardinals hope to run the football better in 2007

The Cardinals will have a new attitude with Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm running the offense.  They have brought in some offensive linemen that are run blockers as the Cardinals want to install a power running game.  Edgerrin James will try to rebound from the worst season of his NFL career.  He played in 16 games (all starts) last season for the Cardinals and he carried the ball 337 times for 1,159 yards (3.4 ypc) with 6 TD runs and he also caught 38 passes for 217 yards (5.7 avg) with 0 TD grabs.  James has had a long and productive career NFL career and the Cardinals hope his still has some life left in his legs.  James has now played in 112 games (all starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 2,525 times for 10,385 yards (4.1 ypc) with 70 TD runs.  He also has caught 394 passes for 3,056 yards (7.8 avg) with 11 TD grabs.

Look for the Cardinals to use Marcel Shipp much more this season to keep Edgerrin James fresh.  Shipp played in 15 games (0 starts) last season and he carried the ball 17 times for 41 yards (2.4 ypc) with 4 TD runs and he also caught 6 passes for 60 yards (10.0 avg).  Shipp has had a decent career so far for the Cardinals and it will be interesting to see how much he will be used this season.  Shipp has now played in 72 games (28 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 590 times for 2,156 yards (3.7 ypc) with 10 TD runs and he has also caught 109 passes for 912 yards (8.4 avg) with 3 TD grabs.

J.J. Arrington has been a bust as a running back but the Cardinals did find a way he could help the team as he returned kickoffs last season.  Arrington played in all 16 games (0 starts) last season and he carried the ball 14 times for 19 yards (1.4 ypc) and he also caught 8 passes for 58 yards (7.3 avg).  Arrington also returned 67 kickoffs for 1,520 yards (22.7 avg) with 1 TD return…..which was 99 yards!  Arrington has now played in 31 games (5 starts) and he has carried the ball 126 times for 389 yards (3.1 ypc) with 2 TD runs and he also has caught 33 passes for 197 yards (6.0 avg).  Arrington has also returned 67 kickoffs for 1,520 yards (22.7 avg) with 1 TD return in his NFL career.

The Arizona Cardinals sign safety Oliver Celestin

The Cardinals have signed Oliver Celestin to provide depth in the secondary and help on special teams.  Celestin played in 13 games last season for the Seahawks and he made 9 tackles and recovered a fumble.  He has not done a lot in his three seasons in the NFL so he might have a problem making the final roster.  He has played in 33 career games and he has made 44 tackles, defensed 1 pass, forced a fumble and recovered 2 fumbles.
