Kurt Warner should be able to hold off Matt Leinhart at the start of the season. It wouldn’t make sense for the Cardinals to throw Leinhart to the wolves when Arizona finally has a good vibe about their football team. Moving into their state of the art stadium and pumping money into their player payroll (signing Edgerrin James was an outstanding move) the Cards must start Kurt Warner. Warner played well in his 10 starts last season averaging 271.3 yards passing per game. Warner could be starting to make a little comeback of sorts even though he’ll probably never get back to the level he was performing at for the Rams from 1999-2001. During those three years Warner started 43 games and threw for 12,612 yards with 98 TD and 53 interceptions. From 2002-05 Warner hasn’t been near as productive. In 29 games (26 starts), Warner threw for 6,563 yards with 21 TD and 25 interceptions. The key for Warner will be his own health as Edgerrin James will give the Cardinals offense a demension they didn’t have last season….a good running game.
The Cardinals had to be ecstatic to see Matt Leinhart fall into their hands with the tenth pick. Lost in all the Vince Young hoopla was how good Leinhart played in last years Championship Game. Leinhart is plain and simply a winner, and a QB that doesn’t get the respect he deserves for the contributions he made to USC’s rise to power. Leinhart started 39 games the last three seasons for the Trojans and threw for 10,693 yards (274.2 yards per game) with 99 TD and only 23 INT. Leinhart is a leader that doesn’t have any strengths that stand out as a football player, but he’s a winner that will lead the Cardinals soon.
